I am a fully trained consultant orthopaedic surgeon and have now retired from the N.H.S.

I worked in hospitals where there was no super-specialisation with the result that I have extensive experience of virtually every type of musculo-skeletal injury.

Discovering trigger point therapy about 30 years ago resulted in my having have much better results with my diagnosis and treatment of neck pain and low back pain. From that I developed a deep interest in whiplash injuries.

I have attended many meetings on the subject including two 3-day-long symposia.

I have seen nearly 2000 cases of established whiplash injury in the last 15 years. I have studied the patterns of progress of the condition and retained all these records for ongoing study.

As a result of that deep interest, I have been able to develop what I believe is the only successful treatment technique for the problem. I have also taught this technique to my osteopath daughter Fiona Birnie. Her website is www.osteopathdurham.co.uk.

I have been writing medico-legal reports for many years and have earned a reputation for producing good sensible reports that are easily understood by the non-medical person.

I see claimants at my home a few miles from Durham or at my rooms in Sunderland.

At my home I am able to see claimants in the evenings and at weekends so that the claimants do not need to take time off work to come and see me.

I like to have all the relevant records and the claimant’s telephone number(s) before I send out an appointment.

I am usually able to see the claimant within two weeks of receiving the records and I am usually able to produce the relevant report within another two weeks.

I am available to see the claimant at his / her home if necessary.

I allow at least an hour for the relevant interview to try to make sure that the report is complete.

I am available to attend court as necessary and have a reputation for doing well in the witness box.
